SACRIFICES – Grand Théâtre de Genève 24/25

Sacrifice will be the guiding theme of the 2024-2025 season at the Grand Théâtre de Genève (GTG). From Wagner’s “Tristan & Isolde” to Purcell’s “Dido & Aeneas” and concluding with Verdi’s “La Traviata,” this season promises richness and accessibility.

Featuring eight operas, four ballet performances, four recitals, and three concerts, the season invites exploration of the concept of sacrifice, woven throughout its programming.

Operas:

“Tristan & Isolde” by Wagner (Sept. 15-27, 2024): Directed by Michael Thalheimer, this monumental production opens the season, exploring the depths of one of history’s greatest love stories.

“La Clémence de Titus” by Mozart (Oct. 16-29, 2024): Following the success of “Justice,” Milo Rau presents his first opera production, featuring the talents of Swiss tenor Bernard Richter.

“Fedora” by Umberto Giordano (Dec. 12-22, 2024): Starring Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak, this thrilling opera marks their debut at the Grand Théâtre de Genève.

“Salomé” by Strauss (Jan. 22-Feb. 2, 2025): Directed by Kornél Mundruczó, this production promises to be extraordinary, accompanied by the grand orchestral prowess of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.

“Didon & Énée” by Purcell (Feb. 20-26, 2025): Franck Chartier and his company Peeping Tom return with their acclaimed production, featuring the exceptional Marie-Claude Chappuis.

“Khovantchina” by Mussorgsky (March 25-April 3, 2025): Calixto Bieito presents this Russian opera, offering a modernist interpretation with the musical expertise of Jukka-Pekka Saraste.

“Stabat Mater” by Pergolesi (May 12-18, 2025): Romeo Castellucci directs Barbara Hannigan and Jakub Józef Orliński in a scenic rendition of Pergolesi’s masterpiece.

“La Traviata” by Verdi (June 14-27, 2025): Karin Henkel brings her fresh vision to this beloved classic, concluding the season with drama and passion.

Dance Performances, Recitals, and More:

  • Two world premieres by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet highlight the dance program.
  • Recitals feature acclaimed artists such as Jakub Józef Orliński, Lisette Oropesa, and Benjamin Appl.
  • Special events include the Geneva International Music Competition and a New Year’s Eve celebration with Camilla Nylund in Vienna.

The season’s diverse offerings, alongside outreach programs like “La Plage,” ensure that the Grand Théâtre de Genève continues to engage and inspire audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
