LA TRAVIATA | Teatro Real Madrid

The Teatro Real’s revival of Willy Decker’s legendary 2005 staging of La Traviata was nothing short of extraordinary. This minimalist yet deeply expressive production continues to captivate with its symbolic power and emotional precision. The stark set, dominated by a giant clock and the constant, ghostly presence of Doctor Grenvil, serves as a poignant reminder of the passing of time and the inescapable proximity of death.

Vocally, the cast assembled for this performance was of the highest caliber.

Artur Ruciński delivered a commanding Giorgio Germont, combining vocal brilliance with striking stage presence. His authoritative tone, perfectly sculpted phrasing, and gleaming high notes made his Germont one of rare stature – a true benchmark in today’s operatic landscape.

Peruvian tenor Iván Ayón-Rivas brought a youthful, almost naive vulnerability to the role of Alfredo. His ringing top notes and secure projection gave his character both passion and authenticity. It was a deeply sympathetic portrayal that resonated strongly with the audience.

The undisputed triumph of the evening, however, was Adela Zaharia as Violetta. Her performance was utterly heart-wrenching. Zaharia masterfully charted Violetta’s transformation across the three acts – from the assertive, almost commanding figure in Act I, to the emotionally tormented woman in Act II, particularly during her duets with Ruciński, which stood out as the emotional core of the night.

Her “Addio del passato” was delivered with rare intensity, and in her final moments, Zaharia offered a breathtakingly poignant portrayal that left the theater suspended in silence before erupting in ovation.

This Traviata was a profound musical and theatrical experience – a revival that not only honored Decker’s visionary production but was elevated by an exceptional cast. With this performance, Adela Zaharia has firmly established herself as a definitive Violetta of our time.
