DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE | Bayerische Staatsoper

What a night! The Bayerisches Staatsorchester transported us into a magical universe, brought to life by August Everding’s timeless staging. Since its premiere in 1978, this production has been a true gem in the repertoire of the Munich Staatsoper, captivating audiences with its classic aesthetic and theatrical approach faithful to Mozart’s vision. And what a delight it is to see this tradition continue, with the serpent spewing “real” fire and the “sternflammende” Queen of the Night dazzling as ever.

In the role of Sarastro, Tareq Nazmi commands the stage with benevolent authority, his deep and noble tone illuminating each of his appearances. Pavol Breslik, as Tamino, captivates with his elegant phrasing and committed stage presence, embodying the brave and romantic prince to perfection. Opposite him, Ying Fang is undoubtedly the star of the evening. Her Pamina is a masterpiece of vocal purity and dramatic intensity. Every note brims with rare expressiveness, and her Ach, ich fühl’s is a breathtakingly poignant moment, where the sincerity and fragility of the character shine through. She delivers a touching and luminous heroine that leaves a lasting impression.

Aleksandra Olczyk, in the iconic role of the Queen of the Night, shines brilliantly. A frequent interpreter of this demanding part, she delivers a masterful performance, combining razor-sharp precision in the vocal runs with electrifying stage presence. It is always a joy to see her in this role, which she commands with dramatic power and technical perfection.

A special mention goes to the Three Ladies – Erika Baikoff, Emily Sierra, and Avery Amereau – who bring great energy to their scenes with their chemistry and vocal precision.

Konstantin Krimmel, as Papageno, wins over the audience with his natural humor and flawless musicality. His performance strikes the perfect balance between lightheartedness and depth, providing an ideal counterpoint to the other characters. His duet with Seonwoo Lee as Papagena is pure delight, overflowing with freshness and tenderness.

The vocal ensemble is further enriched by the brilliant Bayerischer Staatsopernchor and the young soloists of the Tölzer Knabenchor, whose Drei Knaben bring angelic freshness to the stage.

And what can be said about the visual aspect of this production? Jürgen Rose’s enchanting and intricate sets remain a benchmark of classic beauty, enhancing the inherent magic of this timeless work.

The Munich Staatsoper once again proves why it is one of opera’s most revered institutions. Ying Fang shines particularly bright in this Zauberflöte, a production steeped in historical tradition yet still vibrant, alive, and moving. A night that reminds us why Mozart continues to astonish and transport us. Don’t hesitate to see it again and again.
